I recently finished reading a collection of H.P. Lovecraft’s short stories.

The stories were very enjoyable. It was a difficult and not entirely horrifying read. The biggest challenge, for me, was Lovecraft’s style. It’s too… old. I found I’d regularly doze off while reading (but that could just be that I tend to read late at night).

I read each of the following stories (I’ve rated them, too, retrospectively)

The Call of Cthulhu (enjoyable)

Dagon (forgettable)

Winged Death (forgettable)

The Rats in the Walls (captivating)

The Colour Out of Space (captivating)

The Outsider (enjoyable)

The Shadow Out of Time (Mesmerizing)

The Lurking Fear (enjoyable)

Pickman’s Model (enjoyable)

The Thing on the Doorstep (enjoyable)

The Shadow Over Innsmouth (Mesmerizing)

The Festival (captivating)

The Dreams in the Witch House (Mesmerizing)

The Nameless City (enjoyable/captivating)

The Mound (Mesmerizing)

What the Moon Brings (eh?)

In the Walls of Eryx (Cool)

The Unnamable (Enjoyable)

At the Mountains of Madness (Frighteningly Mesmerizing)

The one aspect of Lovecraft’s writing which is simultaneously horrifying and frustrating is a failure to describe the utmost horrific beings. It is often left to you, as the reader, to fill in the blank. This reminds me of a method for writing fiction where you fill in absolutely no unnecessary details, leaving it all to the reader to figure out – making the story more enjoyable as it is the readers imagination that is building the world in which the story takes place. I can see how this technique could make Lovecraft’s writing even more horrific and I can only imagine he was smugly aware of what he was doing by refusing to describe many of the horrors.

Overall it was a good read. Now I’ve got to peak over my shoulder and make sure there are no shoggoths imitating old ones.

I’ve read lots of SEO (search engine optimization) and SEM (search engine marketing) articles. Most of them are only helpful to those of you who are brand new to SEO/SEM. I have not yet come across one that sums it up simply:

The number of links using your keyword to your desired URL will heavily influence your ranking on search results for said key term.

Figure out what other person or company has a high POSITIVE web visibility. I will use Chris Pirillo as an example. He is a fairly popular web personality and has many succesfuly websites. I will use his main website, though, lockergnome.com, for my example.

Perform a google search using advanced operators to see what sites are linking to the site you’ve chosen. You will notice more popular sites may have thousands or more inbound links. Click here to see what I mean.

Do your best to spread inbound links to your site using your name or brand name in a fashion mimicing that of your chosen example.

That’s it. Work on it a little bit every day. You might not be able to get CNN to write about you. You might not end up on wikipedia. But… when you have a number of inbound links as strong as that of your choice you will likely out SEO and SEM any particular negative publicity that comes up about you.

I’ve started keeping a reading list – all the books I’ve read. Over the next couple of days I’ll update it to also show the books I am reading or planning on reading in the near future. Of course… it’ll never be complete because I started it when I was 25 and I’ve already read hundreds of books. I’ll try to remember and add as many of them as I can.

Anyway, here is the list.

Yep. There’s on big wordlwide ant colony that’s covering the entire planet. Well, sort of.

Scientists have found that when mixing ants from seperate Argentine Ant mega-colonies around the world, they are tolerant of eachother.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) they have not formed one, large, super, world-wide, continuous colony. Instead what we have is a set of colonies spread around the world (which are very large, extending hunreds or even thousands of miles) which are tolerant of eachother when mixed.

While hind-sight is 20/20, this is actually not as surprising as people think. I mean, for a colony of ants to stretch 560 miles, as argentine ants do in California, implies that there is something a bit more involved than smell keeping these ants together. Whatever mechanism is in place for these ants to recognize eachother on s scale as large as 560 miles must translate to the entire species.

Very cool, none-the-less.
